R&L Ch. 21—Turn the Beat Around (Turnarounds)

Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.

Session role: focus block.

Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.

How to use this sheet

Seventh chapter of Stage 6 (approach.md §5). R&L defines the concept plainly: a turnaround is a double-bass pattern that switches your downbeat foot to an upbeat and your upbeat foot to a downbeat—the whole feel flips. This chapter has 10 Feet Only Warm-Ups that isolate the switch and 16 Beats that put it into a groove.

R&L’s own coaching for this chapter: turnarounds are powerful, so start slowly. Practise on and off the pedals—tapping the pattern on the floor away from the kit counts. Balance matters. Those three cues together are the whole coaching set for the chapter.

The bpm defaults come from the feet-only row of approach.md §4 (start 60 bpm, target ~120 bpm) for the Warm-Ups, and the 16th-note beats row (start 50 bpm, target ~110 bpm) for the Beats.

Core (most sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
1 Warm-Ups First turnaround, R-L alternating 60 bpm 120 bpm
3 Warm-Ups Turnaround variant with displaced switch 60 bpm 120 bpm
1 Beats First turnaround beat 50 bpm 110 bpm
5 Beats Turnaround beat variant 50 bpm 110 bpm

Rotation (some sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
5 Warm-Ups Turnaround with triplet inserts 60 bpm 120 bpm
8 Warm-Ups Turnaround with doubled beat 60 bpm 120 bpm
9 Beats Longer 4-bar turnaround beat 50 bpm 110 bpm
15 Beats Turnaround with triplet embellishments 50 bpm 110 bpm

Reference (discretionary)

Warm-Ups 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 and Beats 2–4, 6–8, 10–14, 16 are the remaining material. Sample when the core list feels stale or when your ear points at a specific pattern.
