R&L Ch. 19—Ternary Beats and Fills

Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.

Session role: focus block.

Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.

How to use this sheet

Fifth chapter of Stage 6 (approach.md §5). This is the triplet-feel companion to Ch. 17—triplet beats and fills of different lengths (1 to 4 bars), some continuous, some broken up. Like Ch. 17, it is a library to draw from rather than a checklist to work exhaustively.

R&L’s coaching for this chapter is brief and worth carrying every session: stay relaxed and focused, and if a beat is too difficult, feel free to move on and come back to it later. That explicitly permits rotating rather than grinding.

The bpm defaults come from the triplet-material row of approach.md §4 (start 40 bpm, target ~110 bpm). Because these are extended triplet phrases, expect the placement-focus tempos to sit lower than the endurance-focus tempos.

Core (most sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
1 Beats First ternary beat (1-bar entry point) 40 bpm 110 bpm
5 Beats 1-bar ternary beat, second placement 40 bpm 110 bpm
17 Beats 2-bar ternary beat (entry point) 40 bpm 110 bpm
1 Fills First ternary fill 40 bpm 110 bpm
5 Fills Ternary fill variant 40 bpm 110 bpm

Rotation (some sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
15 Beats 1-bar beat variant 40 bpm 110 bpm
31 Beats 2-bar beat variant 40 bpm 110 bpm
43 Beats 4-bar beat (entry point) 40 bpm 110 bpm
3 Fills Ternary fill variant 40 bpm 110 bpm
9 Fills Longer ternary fill 40 bpm 110 bpm

Reference (discretionary)

Beats 2–4, 6–14, 16, 18–30, 32–42, 44–67 and Fills 2, 4, 6–8, 10 onward are the remaining library. R&L is explicit that you can move around freely—sample when a specific beat or fill catches your ear, or when you need a triplet-feel fill for another chapter’s application block.

Practice notes

Log line format

Log this chapter’s work with the exercise number prefixed by 19. and the section identifier—for example 19.b1 60 bpm 5 min pass even for Beats exercise 1, or 19.f1 56 bpm 5 min near placement for Fills exercise 1. See approach.md §8.
