Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.
Session role: focus block.
Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.
Application chapter (Stage 5 in approach.md §5). R&L frames this chapter as “commonly played double bass licks” and assumes the earlier chapters are already solid. If you have worked through Stages 2 and 3 methodically, they say these should not take long to master—this chapter is idiomatic vocabulary, not new coordination.
The chapter has two short sections. Beats 1–11 are the common groove shapes. Fills 1–11 are the common fill shapes. R&L asks that both be practised at many tempos with a metronome or drum machine—the point of the chapter is having these patterns “under your feet” so you can play them at will.
The bpm defaults come from the 16th-note beats row of approach.md §4 (start 50 bpm, target ~110 bpm). Because these are common patterns, some will already sit under the feet—check honestly whether the pattern is truly clean or just familiar, and drop bpm if the answer is the second.
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beats | Common double-bass groove (entry point) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 3 | Beats | Common groove variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 1 | Fills | Common double-bass fill (entry point) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 3 | Fills | Common fill variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Beats | Groove variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 7 | Beats | Groove variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 5 | Fills | Fill variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 7 | Fills | Fill variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
Beats 2, 4, 6, 8–11 and Fills 2, 4, 6, 8–11 are further common shapes. R&L’s point is that the whole list is worth having under the feet—sample two or three per session and rotate rather than trying to cover the chapter in a week.
Log this chapter’s work with the exercise number prefixed by 14. and the section identifier—for example 14.b1 80 bpm 5 min pass clean for Beats exercise 1, or 14.f1 70 bpm 5 min near weak-foot for Fills exercise 1. The b / f prefix disambiguates because both sections number from 1. See approach.md §8.
