R&L Ch. 6—8th-Note Triplets

Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.

Session role: focus block.

Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.

How to use this sheet

First chapter of Stage 3 (approach.md §5). Unlocked once Stage 2 core beats hold ~90 bpm cleanly. This is where the triplet feel enters the manual—R&L notes that the most common footing is alternating (RLR LRL) but that the Warm-Ups deliberately walk through other footings to broaden coordination.

R&L makes two specific points worth carrying into every session in this chapter. First, keep the triplets wide and even—do not rush them into a shuffle when they are not meant to be one. Second, although 8th-note triplet double bass is usually played at fast tempos, the slow tempos are just as valuable to practise; do not skip them. Also note R&L’s rule of thumb that all beats and fills are written strong-foot lead, with alternative footings printed where they matter.

The bpm defaults come from the triplet-material row of approach.md §4 (start 40 bpm, target ~110 bpm).

Core (most sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
1 Warm-Ups Alternating 8th-note triplets (RLR LRL) 40 bpm 110 bpm
3 Warm-Ups Continuous alternating triplets 40 bpm 110 bpm
13 Beats First beat with triplet feet 40 bpm 110 bpm
17 Beats Triplet beat, more involved snare 40 bpm 110 bpm
30 Beats Continuous shuffle, strong-foot lead 40 bpm 110 bpm

Rotation (some sessions)

Ex. Section Role Start Target
5 Warm-Ups Extended alternating triplets 40 bpm 110 bpm
9 Warm-Ups Grouped footings (RRL / LRL) 40 bpm 110 bpm
21 Beats Triplet beat variant 40 bpm 110 bpm
31 Beats Continuous shuffle variant 40 bpm 110 bpm
47 Fills Triplet fill 40 bpm 110 bpm

Reference (discretionary)

Warm-Ups 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 are the footing pairs to their odd-numbered neighbours—touch when the core Warm-Ups are stable. Beats 14–16, 18–29 and 32–44 are groove variants, including the continuous shuffles at 32, 34, 38, 39. Fills 45–71 are the triplet fill library; R&L’s own point is that this is a starting set, not an exhaustive one. Sample rather than checklist.
