Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.
Session role: focus block.
Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.
Final step of the 16th-note density ladder (Stage 2 in approach.md §5). This chapter is itself a graduated ladder—it walks up from five-note groups through eight-note groups to full 16-note runs. R&L is clear that this is not an exhaustive list; the point is exposure to the range, not mastery of every combination.
Attack this chapter by picking one entry point at each density and holding it until it is clean. Do not try to work every group size in one session. The core list below picks representative entry points at the five-note, eight-note and sustained-16 densities—leave the others for rotation and reference.
The bpm defaults come from the 16th-note beats row of approach.md §4 (start 50 bpm, target ~110 bpm). At the sustained-16 end, expect the real starting bpm to be lower than the default—drop until the weak foot can hold the run for the full minute.
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warm-Ups | Five-note group (entry point) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 5 | Warm-Ups | Eight-note group (entry point) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 9 | Warm-Ups | Sustained 16-note run (entry point) | 40 bpm | 100 bpm |
| 13 | Beats | Beat built on longer 16th runs | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 17 | Beats | Beat with syncopated snare over 16ths | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Warm-Ups | Six-note group | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 7 | Warm-Ups | Ten-note group | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 10 | Warm-Ups | Sustained-16 variant (weak-foot lead) | 40 bpm | 100 bpm |
| 21 | Beats | Funkier beat variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 33 | Fills | One-measure fill | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
Warm-Ups 2, 4, 6, 8 are footing pairs to their odd-numbered neighbours. Beats 14–16, 18–20 and 22–28 are groove variants—sample when your ear points at one. Fills 29–38 are shorter fill ideas; Fills 39–46 are R&L’s set of examples of hand patterns played over continuous 16th-note double bass, and are worth reading through once the sustained-16 Warm-Ups are stable. R&L notes explicitly that this chapter is not exhaustive—treat the reference list the same way.
Log this chapter’s work with the exercise number prefixed by 5.—for example 5.9 56 bpm 5 min near weak-foot. See approach.md §8.
