Skeleton sheet. This chapter has the metadata block and Core / Rotation / Reference tables but has not yet been rewritten to the shape of chapter-01.md and chapter-02.md—no first-session walkthrough, no worked advancement example, no per-exercise rationale. See chapter-template.md for the shape this sheet will take when filled, and DEVELOPMENT.md “Things to do later” for the outstanding propagation work.
Session role: focus block.
Every session opens with warm-up on the current R&L Ch. 1 exercises before you work this chapter. Baseline 30-min session: ~7–8 min warm-up (Ch. 1) → ~15 min focus (this chapter) → ~5–6 min application → ~2 min cool-down. Full detail in approach.md §6.
Second step of the 16th-note density ladder (Stage 2 in approach.md §5). Where Ch. 2 taught two consecutive 16ths between the feet, this chapter drills three-note groupings—which is where footing choice starts to matter. R&L notes that the most common way to play three consecutive 16ths is RLR or LRL, and that the Warm-Ups deliberately walk through alternative footings (RLL, LRR, RRR-LLL and so on) so you become aware of the possibilities rather than defaulting to one.
That is the reason to spend real time on the Warm-Ups even when the Beats feel more useful. Each Warm-Up is written with several footing labels underneath (variants 1–6). Do not attempt every variant on every session—pick one variant, hold it for the 1-minute clean pass, and rotate variants across sessions.
The bpm defaults below come from the 16th-note beats row of approach.md §4 (start 50 bpm, target ~110 bpm).
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warm-Ups | Three-note grouping, RLR / LRL footings | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 2 | Warm-Ups | Three-note grouping, footing variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 7 | Beats | First beat with three consecutive 16ths | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 9 | Beats | Three consecutive 16ths in a different placement | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 12 | Beats | Groove-context reinforcement | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| Ex. | Section | Role | Start | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Warm-Ups | Alternate footing (RLL / LRR) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 4 | Warm-Ups | Alternate footing (LRR / RLL) | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 14 | Beats | Beat variant | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 19 | Fills | One-measure fill | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
| 22 | Fills | One-measure fill | 50 bpm | 110 bpm |
Beats 15–18 and Fills 20–28 are secondary material—pick them when you want variety or when your ear points at one specifically. Fills 29–32 are four-bar phrases R&L includes to show different fill lengths; treat them as phrasing examples, not drills.
Log this chapter’s work with the exercise number prefixed by 3.—for example 3.7 64 bpm 5 min pass even. See approach.md §8.
